Microalgal Consortia for Waste Treatment and Valuable Bioproducts

Microalgae have been considered a promising and sustainable candidate for wastewater treatment valuable bioproducts, such as feedstocks food, nutrients, energy. However, many challenging bottlenecks, low biomass productivity, expensive harvesting techniques, inefficient extraction of biofuels restrict its large-scale commercial production. Symbiotic relationships between microalgae bacteria, also known microalgal consortia, proven to be effective solutions mitigating technical economic limitations. The natural artificial symbiotic consortia combine microorganisms with various metabolic activities, which leads production the removal pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCP) from wastewater. Many applied treatments reduced energy costs higher efficiency in recovering resources. In this study we review present research status prospects emphasizing associated mechanism cooperative symbiosis studies on diverse environmental biotechnological applications.
